At Shamrock, our telescopic handler course is designed to give students the skills and qualifications necessary to conduct telehandler operations across many different worksites within the construction and manufacturing industries. Also known as a telehandler, this comprehensive training will be provided in a small class environment, giving each student the sufficient one-on-one time with our highly knowledgeable trainers for successful completion of this course.

The training in its current form meets the criteria of the unit of competency requirements.

A telehandler is a mobile lifting machine consisting of a telescopic boom, fitted with a lifting attachment that can extend outwards and upwards. It is an extremely versatile machine across many industries due to the various attachments available including buckets, forks and lifting jibs.

At Shamrock, we have created a detailed training plan that will teach you how to plan and prepare a job for telehandler operations, carry out all routine operational checks, select and fit various attachments, operate a telehandler in line with equipment capabilities, relocate the machine to a designated area and finally maintain a clean work environment.

All aspects of this course will be taught through written and practical teachings at our onsite training facility in Brisbane. The course material will include, but is not limited to the following;

  • Health and safety legislation, Australian standards and codes of practice
  • Hazard identification, risk assessment and control measures
  • Telehandler routine operational checks
  • How to operate a telehandler
  • Characteristics and capabilities of various attachments
  • Maintenance of telehandler and equipment
  • Isolation procedures
  • Relocation of a telehandler between sites
  • Documentation relevant to telehandler operations
  • Safe working load calculations
  • Communication in the workplace

The successful candidate will have the skills and practical knowledge to carry out the following;

  • Identify, monitor and record potential workplace hazards such as overhead powerlines, weather conditions and ground stability.
  • Assess the risks associated with telehandler operations and implement the necessary control measures using the hierarchy of control
  • Carry out all operational checks including pre-start, controls, brakes and attachment checks
  • Operate a telehandler in compliance with safety regulations and site procedures
  • Select and fit various attachments and associated lifting gear specific to the job being carried out
  • Recognise the capabilities and limitations of a telehandler, its attachments and associated lifting gear
  • Conduct maintenance duties on plant and equipment and record accordingly
  • Identify defects and isolate according to site procedures
  • Estimate safe working loads to ensure safe lifting and transferring of materials
  • Effectively communicate with all workplace personnel specifically the dogman to ensure safe working load requirements are in place along with the appropriate lifting gear
  • Ensure communication techniques and equipment are in use while operating a telehandler such as two-way radios, hand signals and signage
  • Comply with relevant health and safety legislation and site policies and procedures

On successful completion of this course, you will be issued with a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment giving you the necessary qualifications to safely operate a telehandler across many worksites in Australia.

Delivery

Shamrock Training provides flexible delivery in all courses consisting of classroom based theory learning using a range of methodologies, onsite workplace training and scenario based practical knowledge training. Theory content is always supported by the provisions of practical skills training to enable you to transfer the information learnt in the classroom to a simulated working environment.

Pre-requisite Information

  • Be able to read and write basic English
  • Be physically capable of working outdoors, on your feet for up to 6 hours
  • Provide photo identification
  • Wear steel capped or safety boots on site; sun protection Hat, long sleeved shirt and pants – are also recommended.

Course Outcomes / AQF Certification

Upon successful completion a Statement of Attainment for the unit of competency completed will be issued.
