RIIMPO318E Conduct Civil Construction Skid Steer Operations 

At Shamrock, our nationally recognised skid steer training is designed to give students the skills and practical experience necessary to safely operate a skid steer across many worksites in Australia. This unit of competency is taught by our highly knowledgeable trainers in a small class setting, giving students the required one-on-one training to successfully complete this course.

This training in its current form meets the criteria of the unit of competency requirements.

A skid-steer loader, also known as a bobcat is a smallrigid-framed machine with multiple attachments available, making it an extremely versatile machine on any jobsite. It can be used for many different tasks including earth moving on a construction site to smaller domestic jobs such as landscaping, due to its manoeuvrability and size.

This training will provide students with detailed training on how to plan and prepare a job for skid steer operations, carry out routine operational checks, operate a skid steer in compliance with company procedures, transfer materials safely and efficiently to a designated area, choose and fit appropriate attachments for the task in hand, relocate the skid steer between worksites, conduct maintenance checks and finally maintain a clear work environment.

All aspects of this training will be taught through written and practical teachings at our onsite training facility in Brisbane. The course material will include, but is not limited to the following;

• Hazard identification and environmental issues
• Risk management and control implementation
• Routine operational checks
• Safe operating techniques of a skid steer loader
• Capabilities and limitations of a skid steer loader and its attachments
• Various types of attachments and their characteristics
• Maintenance and isolation procedures
• Relocation of a skid steer loader
• Communication in the workplace
• Safe working load and earthwork calculations
• WHS legislation, Australian standards and site policies and procedures

The successful applicant will have the knowledge to demonstrate the following;

• Identify, report and monitor all potential workplace hazards such as underground services, ground conditions and traffic
• Implement necessary control measures using the hierarchy of control and apply safe work practices
• Conduct all routine checks of the skid steer loader including pre-starts and shut down checks
• Choose and fit several different attachments appropriate to the work being carried out
• Complete skid steer operations such as spreading and stripping materials, backfilling and excavation activities
• Carry out maintenance duties on the machine and associated equipment
• Identify defects and isolate according to site procedures
• Relocate a skid steer loader between work sites in a safe and efficient manner
• Communicate effectively with all workplace personnel and ensure communication techniques and equipment such as two-way radios and hand signals are in place
• Estimate safe working loads to ensure safe and efficient transportation of materials
• Comply with all health and safety legislation and worksite policies and procedures relevant to skid steer operations

On successful completion of this course, students will have the ability to safely conduct skid steer operations in compliance with all relevant health and safety legislation. Shamrock will issue you with a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment that will allow you to operate a skid steer across many different work sites within Australia.
