Our Confined Spaces Course is designed for workers operating in various industries who work in enclosed or partially enclosed space, that is not intended for people to occupy. Participants will learn how to plan, prepare, work and exita confined space as well as basic emergency response procedures and information of maintenance and stowage of all equipment.

The purpose of our nationally recognised Confined Spaces course is to provide students with the knowledge and capability to safely enter and conduct work in confined spaces across many work sites in Australia.

The training in its current form meets the criteria of the unit of competency requirements.

Confined spaces can be enclosed or partially enclosed and are not intended to be areas where people work. Storage tanks, pressure vessels, pipes and sewers are all examples of confined spaces and due to poor ventilation,it poses a great danger for workers, therefore the appropriate training is vital.

Shamrock have developed a detailed training plan with an emphasis on risk assessment and safety precautions, ensuring that all students will have the confidence to undertake work in confined spaces across many different working environments.

This course will give you the necessary tools to be able to plan and prepare a job for confined space entry, carry out work in various types of confined spaces such as tanks and vessels, safely enter and exit a confined space, inspect and isolate a confined space when necessary, complete permits and finally maintain a clean work area.

All aspects of this course will be taught through written and practical teachings at our onsite training facility in Brisbane, within easy access to the airport. The course material will include, but is not limited to the following;

  • Hazard identification, risk assessment and control measures
  • WHS legislation, Australian standards and codes of practice
  • Entry and exit procedures for confined space entry
  • Appropriate permits for confined space entry
  • Types of safety equipment and their functions and capabilities
  • Personal protective equipment and emergency procedures
  • Written, verbal and visual communication
  • Maintenance and Isolation procedures

The successful candidate will have the knowledge and ability to demonstrate the following:

  • Identify and report potential risks and hazards associated with confined space entry and implement the necessary control measures
  • Work in various confined spaces such as storage tanks, pressure vessels, pits and sewers
  • Obtain the appropriate permits for entry into confined spaces
  • Conduct work inside a confined space according to safe work practices
  • Choose the correct tools and safety equipment such for the specific task in hand
  • Understand the characteristics, limitations and capabilities of safety equipment such as breathing apparatus’s and atmospheric monitoring devices
  • Exit a confined space in compliance with work policies and procedures
  • Conduct an inspection of the space after exiting
  • Recognise the different contaminants and toxic gases and their effects on the body
  • Record and maintain information relevant to the entry and exit of confined spaces including safety data sheets and safe work method statements.
  • Effectively communicate with all workplace personnel specifically the stand-by person and ensure appropriate methods of communication such as signage and barriers are in place.

All aspects of this course are essential in successfully completing your confined spaces training. On successful completion of this unit, Shamrock will issue you with a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment giving you the opportunity to work in multiple industries across the country.

Theory content is always supported by the provisions of practical skills training to enable you to transfer the information learnt in the classroom to a simulated working environment.

Pre-requisite Information

  • Be able to read and write basic English
  • Be physically capable of working outdoors, on your feet for up to 6 hours
  • Provide photo identification
  • Wear steel capped or safety boots on site; sun protection Hat, long sleeved shirt and pants – are also recommended.

Course Outcomes / AQF Certification

Upon successful completion a Statement of Attainment for the unit of competency completed will be issued.
