Non Slewing Crane Licence

The non slewing crane licence (CN class) is the HRWL required before operating any non-slewing crane on a Queensland worksite. Knuckle boom cranes and other non-slewing configurations are common on Brisbane building sites, glass and facade installation projects, and anywhere a vehicle-mounted non-slewing crane is in operation. No non slewing crane licence - no legal right to operate the machine.

Shamrock Training runs the non slewing crane licence course in Brisbane at our Northgate training centre. Real operators as trainers, same day statement of attainment.

What is a Non-Slewing Crane?

A non-slewing crane is any crane where the boom or load structure does not rotate around a central point. The most common on Brisbane worksites is the knuckle boom crane - a vehicle-mounted folding arm crane used for placing materials in locations a slewing crane can't reach.

This is a different machine and different licence class from:

  • C2 - mobile crane up to 20 tonnes

  • C6/C1/C0 - slewing cranes where the structure rotates

  • CV - vehicle loading crane (separate class)

Who Needs a Non Slewing Crane Licence?

  • Workers operating knuckle boom cranes on Brisbane construction sites

  • Glass and facade installation workers using truck-mounted non-slewing cranes

  • Building materials delivery operators using vehicle-mounted non-slewing cranes

  • Maintenance workers operating non-slewing cranes at facilities and worksites

  • Anyone whose employer requires a CN HRWL before operating on a Queensland site

Operating without a non slewing crane licence is illegal under Queensland WHS laws. Fines apply to both the operator and the employer.

FAQs - Non-Slewing Crane Licence Brisbane

  • What is the formula for lifting load for a crane?

The basic crane lifting capacity formula considers the Safe Working Load (SWL) at a given radius from the load chart, factored against the weight of the load, rigging equipment, and any deductions for boom angle and configuration. Load chart reading and lift calculations are covered in all crane licence courses delivered by Shamrock Training in Northgate, Brisbane.

  • What is a tagline for lifting cranes?

A tagline is a rope attached to a suspended load during a crane lift to control load rotation and prevent uncontrolled swinging, and is managed by the dogman or designated ground worker during the lift. Safe use of taglines and load control procedures are covered in the DG dogman licence course (CPCCLDG3001) delivered by Shamrock Training in Northgate, Brisbane.

  • What is SWL in crane lifting?

SWL stands for Safe Working Load, which is the maximum load a crane or lifting equipment is rated to handle safely at a given radius and configuration as specified in the load chart. Understanding and applying SWL is a core competency covered in all crane and dogging licence courses at Shamrock Training in Northgate, Brisbane.

  • Is a franna a non-slewing crane?

No, a Franna is a slewing mobile crane because its boom rotates 360 degrees around its base, placing it in the C class HRWL category rather than the CN non-slewing class. Shamrock Training in Northgate, Brisbane delivers the C2 slewing mobile crane licence (TLILIC0022) which covers Franna and similar pick-and-carry crane operations.

  • What does slew mean in crane terms?

Slewing refers to the rotation of a crane's superstructure and boom around a central axis, allowing the operator to swing a load horizontally without moving the crane itself. This distinguishes slewing mobile cranes, which require a C class HRWL, from non-slewing cranes covered by the CN licence, both delivered by Shamrock Training in Northgate, Brisbane.

  • What is a non-slew crane?

A non-slewing crane is a mobile crane whose boom does not rotate around a central axis, instead moving only in a fixed forward arc, with the vehicle itself repositioned to change load placement direction. Shamrock Training in Northgate, Brisbane delivers the CN non-slewing mobile crane licence covering this crane class for operators working on construction and civil sites across Queensland.
